Overview
The PowerBlock Elite EXP takes a completely different approach to adjustable dumbbells. Instead of flat plates on a bar, PowerBlock uses a stacked block design housed in a rectangular cage frame. The result is the most space-efficient adjustable dumbbell we’ve ever tested.
Where the Bowflex 552 is wide and traditional-looking, the PowerBlock is short, blocky, and remarkably dense. At its largest setting (50 lbs), it’s still barely 12 inches long — roughly half the footprint of many competitors.
Design & Build Quality
The Elite EXP is built around a steel frame that’s genuinely impressive. The selector pin slides into numbered slots on the side of the dumbbell to lock in your chosen weight. The overall construction feels significantly more durable than plastic-housed designs.
The urethane grip handle is comfortable and provides good traction. Our testers with larger hands noted the handle is slightly narrower than a traditional dumbbell — something to be aware of if you have big palms.
The EXP Expandability Feature
What sets the Elite EXP apart is its unique expansion system. The base set covers 5–50 lbs, but you can purchase Stage 2 and Stage 3 add-on kits to expand up to 70 lbs or 90 lbs respectively. No other adjustable dumbbell offers this level of future-proofing.
If you’re currently lifting at moderate weights but plan to progress significantly over the next few years, this is a compelling advantage — you don’t have to buy an entirely new set.
Performance in Workouts
The cage design does take some getting used to. Exercises like wrist curls and certain tricep movements feel slightly constrained compared to traditional dumbbells. However, for the vast majority of standard exercises, the PowerBlock performs excellently:
- Pressing movements: The compact length is actually an advantage — easier to control
- Rows: Great — the rectangular form doesn’t interfere
- Curls: Comfortable once you adapt to the grip width
- Lateral raises: Works well; the lighter settings feel natural
One quirk: because the weights are stacked inside the cage, you can’t see the weight marking during a lift. You have to remember what pin position you set before picking it up.
Who It’s Best For
- Apartment dwellers or anyone with minimal gym space
- Long-term lifters who plan to increase strength significantly
- Anyone who values steel construction over plastic housing
- Budget-focused buyers who want premium feel without premium price
Verdict
The PowerBlock Elite EXP earns its place as the best adjustable dumbbell for small spaces. It’s compact, durable, expandable, and backed by one of the best warranties in the category. The adjustment mechanism is slightly slower than a dial system, but the build quality and expandability more than compensate. An excellent choice for serious home gym builders.
