The JAXJOX DumbbellConnect is the most tech-forward adjustable dumbbell, with app connectivity and auto-tracking. Great for data-driven fitness enthusiasts, less so for purists.
Overview
The JAXJOX DumbbellConnect is the most innovative adjustable dumbbell on the market — and the most divisive. It connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth, automatically logs your workouts, tracks reps and sets through built-in sensors, and integrates with fitness apps. For tech-savvy fitness enthusiasts, this is genuinely exciting. For traditionalists, it’s an unwanted distraction.
At $299, it also undercuts most premium competitors, making it an attractive entry point into quality adjustable dumbbells.
Design & Build Quality
The DumbbellConnect has a clean, modern aesthetic that looks more like a prop from a sci-fi movie than a piece of gym equipment. The overmolded grip is comfortable and distinctive, and the twist-adjustment mechanism is smooth and intuitive.
Build quality is solid but not exceptional. There’s a slight premium-plastic feel to parts of the housing that separates it from the all-metal construction of the Ironmaster or PowerBlock. For the price, though, the construction is competitive.
The Tech Features
The built-in sensors track:
- Rep counting — detects movement and counts reps automatically
- Set timing — logs set duration and rest periods
- Workout history — full session logging in the JAXJOX app
- Progress tracking — volume and load tracking over time
In our testing, the rep counting was accurate about 85–90% of the time on standard exercises. Unusual movements like lateral raises or complex compound exercises occasionally confused the sensor. The app itself is well-designed and the workout data is genuinely useful if you care about tracking progress.
The full feature set requires the JAXJOX premium subscription, which is worth factoring into the total cost of ownership.
The Twist Adjustment
JAXJOX uses a single-handed twist mechanism similar to the NüoBell, but with 6 lb increments instead of 5. Weight changes take about 3–4 seconds — fast and intuitive. The 6 lb increments are a larger jump than we’d prefer, especially at lower weights (8 → 14 → 20 lbs can be a significant gap for certain exercises).
The 8 lb minimum is also worth noting — there’s no sub-8 lb option. Beginners or those doing light accessory work may find the lightest setting too heavy for certain movements.
Performance in Workouts
For moderate-to-heavy training in the 20–50 lb range, the DumbbellConnect performs very well. The grip is comfortable, the weight adjusts quickly, and the overall feel is pleasant during workouts.
- Chest and back: Strong performance, good balance
- Shoulder exercises: Works well; the 6 lb jump is occasionally noticeable
- Arms: Comfortable; the textured grip excels here
- Legs: Solid goblet squats and lunges at 50 lbs
The tech features are most useful for people who want an automated workout log without manually tracking in an app.
Who It’s Best For
- Tech-forward fitness enthusiasts who want automated workout tracking
- Moderate lifters working in the 8–50 lb range
- Budget-conscious buyers who still want a quality product
- Those new to data-driven fitness looking for an accessible entry point
Verdict
The JAXJOX DumbbellConnect delivers unique value in its app integration and competitive price point. It’s not the best-built or most versatile adjustable dumbbell on the market, but for tech enthusiasts and moderate lifters who want workout tracking built into their equipment, it’s an excellent choice. The 6 lb increments and 1-year warranty are the only notable compromises.
